In the past, I've had somewhat odd bat encounters at my farm here in
Ontario. Before I closed in the back porch area, if I stood on the
deck behind my house around dusk or just later, a bat would almost
always appear to circle around and occasionally whoosh close by
within an arm's length several times before flying off. I always
suspected that it was capturing mosquitoes that were (inevitably)
attracted to me if I stood still for a couple of minutes. I also
used to go jogging in the evening and as I passed a certain section
of trail, a bat would fly out from some hidden place at the same spot
each evening. It would circle me and sometimes fly next to me for a
few seconds as I continued running. On a number of occasions, I
felt a light tap on my baseball cap. It must have touched me with
the tip of its wing. These seemed to be healthy bats that were
either a bit territorial, curious, or perhaps opportunistic about
flying close to me to capture the mosquitoes I attracted. However,
these bats seemed healthy. If a bat did something like I've
described and I later found it dead, I'd defintely be considering the
possibility that it could be rabid.
