Angela et al., one spot for the smelt run in April is at the Melanson
bridge along the Gaspereau River (ask Kevin Reid in the store there
for info'), and I know they are jigged and dip-netted (still
legally?) between Melanson and Gaspereau. In May you will want to
observe and show your friends how the square-netting works for
gaspereau (until the end of May, when the netting stops for
conservation reasons). Perhaps the easiest place to observe a square
net in operation is just south of the Gaspereau River bridge at
Gaspereau (confusing??). I think the family that operates this net
is named Coldwell (lots of them at Gaspereau!), and the father or a
son lives just south of the trapping site. Inquiring at that house
should provide info' regarding sates of the gaspereau run and dates
for the fishing -- lately the 16 or so families that operate square
nets have chosen to not fish on certain days of the week, again for
conservation reasons. These are mostly mixed farmers who are
supplementing their income by the seasonal gaspereau fishing, and
most of the fish end up being salted and shipped to the Caribbean
(Haiti?).
