Index of Subjects It hasn't been what I call busy here in White Point. Steady. There are still many Juncos and Chickadees and many Mourning doves. The Blue jays are away longer and longer and the Starlings only show occasionally now. (thankfully) I am sorry to say we lost three mourning doves this week, one to a major window strike, another to that little Sharp-shinned Hawk, and another to the cat from the mobile home park behind us. For a couple days there were a couple blackbirds but I haven't seen them for a bit . Sadly, we lost our Red-breasted nuthatch in a freak accident. It was dead in the driveway after being here all day whizzing back and forth from the chickadee feeder in the grapevine to the swallow house we put back up on the pole by the barn. I think it must have hit a car that was parked while I had a meeting here. Our car sits differently when it is here but it wasn't here. He was such a busy little fellow and very vocal. I miss him. Lots of Robins have returned and established whose nest is to go where. No sign of the winter one as it doesn't seem to scrap with this lot. Maybe it was one of the young birthed hereon the property. heaven knows there were a number of them. The Red-winged blackbird is back and was singing in the swamp in the rain yesterday. There are a couple more Grackles tumbling through the maple tree. The Northern flicker is busy calling. Not around the feeders now except very occasionally. The Hairy and Downy woodpeckers and their young all have visitors and they are coming in all sizes all the time and they want seed cakes. No doubt about that!! A couple American goldfinches have come, usually about suppertime, and they are starting to show their colours. I saw a heron fly over a couple days ago, maybe heading for the 'lake' behind White Point Beach Resort. The big crows got into a kafuffle with might be an owl but I don't know. It was too far away to tell. The Ravens are moving off again. The raccoon came and dismantled all the feeders last night and apparently even ate some of the hardware. We are missing hooks and eye bolts and the nut off one of the eye bolts. Chipmunk is a timid one, so far no sign of the friendly ones. Sparrows include several beautiful and feisty White Throats, a couple Song sparrows, American tree sparrows and a couple Fox sparrows that only dropped in and continued on their way. Heard a solitary (I think) peeper last night when the wind dropped and the rained slowed. Perhaps there will me more sounding tonight. Heaven knows there is plenty of moisture here abouts!! Walking across the yard is like walking over clam flats. MargMillard, White Point, Queens http://margmillard.ca
