This bird is in 1st winter = Plumage and is the one often mistaken for Clay-coloured Sparrow. I find = the quickest way to tell the difference (between chipping & clay-colour) = if the lores are dark then it'f a chippy, if they're clear giving an = open face then it's a clay. The recent snow has brought a Clay-coloured Sparrow to my feeders. Tom K. I had three American tree sparrows first thing in the morning, = which is why this one has me so puzzled. It is brown with streaks and = the streaking continues on the head as well. it is clear breasted, and = has a dark line through the eye. The tail is notched. The lower bill did = seem to be a different colour that the upper part. It is smaller than a = white-throated sparrow (see pictures) and was chased off once by a junco = that looked a tiny bit bigger.
