The first time was at dawn while getting ready for the Wolfville count. In the poor light before sunrise and having never seen female cardinal I spent a lot of time trying to figure out what kind of waxwing had so little markings and was darker on the top of the tail. http://myweb.dal.ca/pmkelly/FemaleCardinal.jpg There has been an unusual sparrow hanging around most of today as well. I had three American tree sparrows first thing in the morning, which is why this one has me so puzzled. It is brown with streaks and the streaking continues on the head as well. it is clear breasted, and has a dark line through the eye. The tail is notched. The lower bill did seem to be a different colour that the upper part. It is smaller than a white-throated sparrow (see pictures) and was chased off once by a junco that looked a tiny bit bigger.
