Index of Subjects I have seen a sharp-shinned do that, and the shrike. It does that making its little meowling sound. Must be scary to the littler ones......would be to me. I wonder if the Goshawk is the same one we saw on the grapevine a short while ago. How far do they range.? http://margmillard.ca ----- Original Message ----- From: "James Hirtle" <jrhbirder@hotmail.com> To: "Naturens Naturens" <naturens@chebucto.ns.ca> Sent: Thursday, December 04, 2008 12:19 AM Subject: [NatureNS] Northern Goshawk and Prey Hi all: I had an interesting observation related to me. Apparently a gentleman was in his tree stand bow hunting. While there he noted two squirrels busily dropping cones from the top of a very thick evergreen tree. Every now and then these two red squirrels would chase one another around and around the tree. After a time the hunter noted a northern goshawk. This bird proceeded to land on the lower branch of the thick evergree tree and hopped from branch to branch up into the tree. After a time a big commotion occurred. All of a sudden the northern goshawk appeared again on the bottom branches of the tree with one of the squirrels in talon. The goshawk had descended the tree branch by branch after apprehending the prey. This method of hunting for a hawk is definitely new for me and I've never heard of such an occurrence before. From a scientific perspective it would be nice to know if any studies have shown other goshawks using this method of hunting to obtain prey from hard to get at locations.
