--Apple-Mail-66-1061063112 Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Content-Type: text/plain; charset=WINDOWS-1252; delsp=yes; format=flowed The=A0October meeting of the Halifax Centre of the RASC (Royal =20 Astronomical Society of Canada) will be held Friday,=A0October 17th at =20= 8:00 PM in Room 260 of the Sobey Building at Saint Mary's University =20 (PLEASE NOTE the new room location -- the Sobey Building is adjacent to =20= the Loyola Building). (A map can be found at the Centre's web site =96 the new location is in =20= building #2; see below.) Members of the public are welcome. Attendance is free. The meeting =20 agenda will include: Computing the Cosmos: A Universe in a Computer Modern supercomputers allow astronomers & astrophysicists to create =20 digital simulations of entire universes of unprecedented size and =20 accuracy. These virtual universes can also be tuned to obey a different =20= set of Laws of Physics, allowing us to play the role of Creator and =20 examine what our Universe might have looked like under different =20 circumstances. Using digitally created movies and images from these =20 simulations, Dr Thacker will explore some of the spectacular progress =20= that has resulted from these techniques, and examine what future =20 research can tell us. Dr. Rob Thacker is an Associate Professor and Canada Research Chair at =20= Saint Mary's University (formerly Queen's University, McMaster =20 University, and U.C. Berkeley). His work is focused on large scale =20 structure and galaxy formation and the use of simulations to aid our =20 understanding of the structure formation process.
