With the gorgeous weather we have had the past few days, there birds back at our property. I have had a few weeks of nearly no birds at all and I know I would die a painful death in a world without them. Today, I have a flock of American Goldfinches and Juncos . The goldfinches are eating seeds that I have come to think of as 'cold weather' supplies; the wild evening primroses and the brown-eyed susans and other rudeckia. Actually they are all over everything. I have had a very large dark brown bird, high up, and then sailing down over the golf course the past couple days. It isn't right for a bald eagle, even an immature one. I can't see it well enough for a better id. It isn't an owl, I think so? Will hope it come here and maybe I can get a better look but it is out over open areas and I am closing up pretty well with all the trees we planted. Maybe too closed. There are robins moving back and forth across the property all morning. Lots of clucking from them. I also have chickadees, pine and yellow rumped Warblers. There is something with them that flits out of the tree very quickly and snags a fly then disappears into the tree. I didn't associate that with yellow rumps but it may well be. I have so much to learn. I think I had a chestnut sided Warbler. There are way too many Blue Jays. I had a solitary Common grackle, stayed a day and haven't seen it since. We have had a couple Crows fly over but very few landing in the yard. The gulls come every so often through the yards here and pick up the long legged flying creatures as they emerge. That appears to be slowing down. Slowly the Woodpeckers, both Hairy and Downy, are working their way back into the grapevine. I had a Northern Flicker must have been Monday. There are many Mourning Doves. Only Sparrows I have seen are the regular Song sparrows. It is so weird to not have either my White throats or White Crowns. I think that's it pretty much. None of the usual fruit hounds are showing up so far. Lots of grapes coming along. Marg Millard, White Point, Queens http://margmillard.ca
