There's a chestnut tree--quite a beautiful one--in the St. Peters Cemetery
in Dartmouth, along the path from the entrance at Victoria road where it
meets Park street. I don't know if it's an American chestnut though, or a
European variety. It fits the description in my Peterson of Castanea
dentata.

On my way back from birding City Field (or Seedeaters paradise I call it) I
stopped at my son's on Silverwood Drive, off Kearney Lake Road. I was
surprised to see some sea urchin like seed pods being blown about. I was
even more surprised to find that they belonged to an American Chestnut Tree
in a neighbours yard. I know we had a couple of these at Uniacke House that
escaped the blight, but hadn't heard of other survivors. Are they as rare
here as I assumed?
