I don't know if it's an American chestnut though, or a European variety. It fits the description in my Peterson of Castanea dentata. Jane -----Original Message----- From: naturens-owner@chebucto.ns.ca [mailto:naturens-owner@chebucto.ns.ca]On Behalf Of joan waldron Sent: Sunday, October 05, 2008 2:32 PM To: naturens@chebucto.ns.ca Subject: [NatureNS] american chestnut tee On my way back from birding City Field (or Seedeaters paradise I call it) I stopped at my son's on Silverwood Drive, off Kearney Lake Road. I was surprised to see some sea urchin like seed pods being blown about. I was even more surprised to find that they belonged to an American Chestnut Tree in a neighbours yard. I know we had a couple of these at Uniacke House that escaped the blight, but hadn't heard of other survivors. Are they as rare here as I assumed?
