They are considered by some to be pests, perhaps mostly by the people in the pest-control businesses? This was the first one I have noticed this year so far. Blake, are you sure it wasn't winged ants that the gulls were after? I often notice both starlings and gulls having feeding frenzies high in the air, and frequently I also notice lots of winged ants on cars and sidewalks etc. at the same time. However, I have not noticed that lately here.
