Yesterday (Sept. 27) here in Wolfville I noticed one of the large
brown/tan CRANE FLIES that are the adults of the larval LEATHERJACKET
maggots that are found at the edges of and under lawns. They are
considered by some to be pests, perhaps mostly by the people in the
pest-control businesses? This was the first one I have noticed this
year so far.

Blake, are you sure it wasn't winged ants that the gulls were after?
I often notice both starlings and gulls having feeding frenzies high
in the air, and frequently I also notice lots of winged ants on cars
and sidewalks etc. at the same time. However, I have not noticed
that lately here.

Cheers from Jim in Wolfville
