I think the most import thing for the leader of any field trip to remember is to introduce themselves, give a brief overview of the trip, rarities that may be seen and make sure everyone shares their name. New younger birds, especially if they are alone, should be paired up with one or two experienced birders. There is nothing lonelier or more daunting than not knowing everyone and being left out of conversations because you are new. It makes one feel like an outsider and may turn them off to future trips. So social skills, as always, are very important especially for the leader. The more information is shared in a friendly way, the better.
