On Saturday July 5, Sheila McCurdy and I paddled out to Stovepipe Island in the north-east corner of Gaspereau Lake to check the eagle nest (previously visited on May 18 with Lesley Butters ; see her messages from that date). As we approached the island we saw an adult eagle on a smaller island which flew off. We didn't see the adults come to the nest. The nest is best viewed off the west side of the island. There is a large rock conveniently located about 100 m offshore. We pulled the kayak up on the rock. There are 3 almost fully grown eaglets in the nest. They were sitting very still for over 30 minutes (post lunch nap?). Later they stretched their wings a bit and one lifted its tail to defecate . A blurry photo of 3 eaglets (hand held small camera): http://www.dermott.ca/paddling/eagl52.jpg From Mar 27, adult flying over nest http://www.dermott.ca/ice08/enest2.jpg On March 24 and 27 the adults were on the nest On May 19 we saw the heads of the small eaglets in the nest So I'm guessing that the eaglets are now at least 8 weeks old see http://www.baldeagleinfo.com/eagle/eagle4.html -- David Dermott , Wolfville Ridge, Nova Scotia, Canada email: dermott@ns.sympatico.ca WWW pages: http://www.dermott.ca/index.html
