The over-wintering grounds in Mexico, only about 130 sq km (50 sq mi) in area, give a whole new meaning to "having all of one's eggs in one basket" -- one prolonged winter storm may be able to eradicate the entire eastern population. And ongoing climatic perturbations (and other problems like noxious weed acts, roadside cutting regimes, pesticide/herbicide use, etc., etc. ,etc.) continue to imperil their Canadian and northern US breeding grounds (thus affecting how many "eggs" are in the Mexican "basket"). I wouldn't exactly call this "as far removed from demise as it's possible to be..."
