1. First Great Blue Heron of the season seen Monday.

2. Feeders are visited by Herring Gulls, Black Ducks, Mallards, Song
Sparrows, and Crows — and a Whitetail Deer. The birds all coexist
except the gulls and the crows. A gull drives the head crow off its
favorite perch, and then tries to occupy the spot, but fails, because
webbed feed are not very good for grasping a small branch. It is very
humorous to watch.

3. There is a Black Duck who has lost use of a leg, and moves on the
ground by flopping along, and using his wings on the grass. He does
all right, but is picked at by the others.

4. A mother Black Duck showed up ten days ago with eleven young. In a
few days, she was down to eight, and now has just three remaining.

4. The hummingbirds Monday evening were putting on a great display,
repeatedly zooming directly upwards from a lilac bush in what may be a
courtship display.
