Hi Kathleen,

As others have remarked, this is one of the clearwing hummingbird  
moths (Hemaris  sp.). As for hawk moths (family Sphingidae) in  
general, Douglas Ferguson recorded 27 species in Nova Scotia in 1955  
and there have probably been other species noted since.
