Although a little difficult to see well in the photos, it looks to me
like Hemaris thysbe (Hummingbird Clearwing Moth).
Bill Oehlke has a nice page about them on his site:
http://www.silkmoths.bizland.com/hthysbe.htm
When in Nova Scotia, I've seen them feeding on wild flowers
surrounding the parking lot at the Joggins Fossil Cliffs on a couple
of occasions over the years.
Other somewhat similar looking day flying species that can be seen
hovering around flowers and that I believe you might have in Nova
Scotia are:
Snowberry Clearwing Moth (Hemaris diffinis):
http://www.silkmoths.bizland.com/hdiffinis.htm
and the (Nessus Sphinx (Amphion floridensis)
http://www.silkmoths.bizland.com/afloride.htm
The Nessus Sphinx is conspicuous for the bright yellow bands on its
abdomen.
