Hi Randy,

I hope you aren't complaining about "only" getting 4 Barreds! Some people w=
ould be jealous of your 4 owls, including me! I've twice had 0 owls on my r=
oute, and your 4 matches the most I've ever had.

Your question is an interesting one. I used to think we'd just count the fi=
rst run as the "official" one, and I may have told people that before. But =
there isn't really any reason for this position. I don't think it has ever =
been an issue since I can't recall ever getting results for 2 surveys of th=
e same route unless there was an obvious problem with the first run (rain o=
r snow, high wind or stuff like that). Of course, we only get what people s=
end us. For all I know, maybe there are people out there who do the route m=
ultiple times and just send us the best results and don't say anything. Don=
't take that as an endorsement, by any means! I guess maybe we could just f=
lip a coin. I wouldn't want to just average the results, for various arcane=
statistical reasons. And saying that you heard 4.3 owls on your owl route =
doesn't sound right.

Subject: [NatureNS] owl route report - llloooowwww

What a difference from last year where on the Nocturnal Owl Survey by my pl=
ace north of Antigonish, we found eight Barred Owls (including two between =
stops), 1 Great Horned and 4 Northern Saw-whets...this year, under ideal co=
nditions (but two weeks earlier than last year's), we found four Barreds, a=
nd that's it (no, we did have a Horned silhouetted on a snag between stops)=
. It would have only been three Barreds, but fortunately, at one stop I was=
looking directly at a spot where one came out of the woods and landed on a=
branch only a few metres from me...the picture I got is pretty cruddy, but=
at least it's a record. Despite all these years of working with owls, it s=
till amazes me how silent they are. I would have never detected that bird h=
ad it not been in my line of sight at that moment.

If I get a free evening, I may try again in two weeks...but this brings up =
an interesting question...if I do the survey a second time, and get differe=
nt results, lower or higher, which one counts? Why?

No bears this year, and only one porcupine.

Randy
