Early today, Ian McLaren, Anne and I saw the Meadowlark that has been coming to feeders on the Stoney Island Road, CSI. We concluded that it is a Western Meadowlark. Apparently there has been some debate on CSI about which species it was, and it was mentioned initially as an Eastern. Some photos from Ian with diagnostic features will be posted later. For the moment, though, it would be helpful to have a good photograph or description of the spread tail, which is very hard to see because of the bird's feeding locations. The location is 1847 Stoney Island Road on CSI. WE SUGGEST VERY STRONGLY THAT PEOPLE GOING TO SEE THIS BIRD STAY IN THEIR CARS ON THE OPPOSITE SIDE OF THE ROAD. Like all Meadowlarks, this bird is the shy (although not unduly so) The feeders are very close to the road, and it is easy to see the bird when it emerges to feed on the platform feeder or on the ground below other feeders in the edge of the woods. Occasionally it forages right into the woods on the ground not far from the edge of the ditch. Chasing it or undue disturbance will be counterproductive and may also antagonize the residents at 1847.
