Hi there,

Several people have asked for more details about the House Finches
which I mentioned in a previous post. They are uncommon in the
province, but there are several pockets of them in SW Nova and here
in metro Halifax. In Halifax they are mostly in the south end (near
the universities), though spreading. Their song is somewhat like a
Purple Finch but has an occasional raspy, burry note which is
distinctly unlike any sound a Purple Finch makes. I regularly see
and hear them near Conrose Field. (The nearest big intersection
would be Oxford Street and Jubilee Road.) The birds are usually to
be found in the backyards of the houses in the square formed by
Waegwoltic Avenue, Cambridge Street, Geldert Street, and Conrose
Avenue. There are birdfeeders at 6445 Waegwoltic which are visible
from the street, and also at 6541 Waegwoltic. There is another at
1600 Cambridge, also visible from the street. The brick house next
door to it has feeders in the backyard, visible from around the
corner on Geldert. The same brick house has extensive ivy covering
its walls, and I believe this is where the House Finches have nested
in the last few years.

There are also often House Finches around the Library at the
University of King's College, and the Chemistry building at
Dalhousie. I haven't noted them in these locations recently, however.

	Cheers,

	Patricia L. Chalmers
	Halifax
