Jan. 14, 2008 - Our yard and feeders this morning were suddenly INVADED by
100+ COMMON REDPOLLS. And, still in mid-morning along Wolfville¹s Main
St., opposite Blomidon Inn, some other feeders had 50+ C. REDPOLLS too!

I¹ll guess it is a bit late in winter for these to be new arrivals to the
province? Perhaps they have been eating mainly wild food like birch seeds
and alder? seeds, and now have depleted such forage and are invading towns
and feeders? [Later lots of e-mails from various places suggested that the
big flocks which seem to be abundant throughout the province are not
generally spending much time at any one set of feeders, but are very mobile
and flying to and fro and probably still feeding a lot on wild sources of
seeds??]

Jan. 16, 2008 - At our feeders this morning, there was a mixed flock of PINE
SISKINS (2+), COMMON REDPOLLS (several), and AM. GOLDFINCHES (a few).

Jan. 18, 2008 - Perhaps 40 or more COMMON REDPOLLS again invaded my feeders
this morning.

Jan. 20, 2008 - Our feeder menagerie in Wolfville just grew by one mundane
bird, a SONG SPARROW. Until now this winter has been our first with no song
sparrow. Also present were a single GOLDFINCH and 2 COMMON REDPOLLS, one of
them a pretty male with lovely pink on its underparts.

Jan. 23, 2008 - Bernard Forsythe called to report 2 immature WHITE-CROWNED
SPARROWS and a C. GRACKLE at 29 Martin Cross Road at Melanson.

Still present at my feeders are the CLAY-COLOURED SPARROW, the imm.
WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW, at least one CHIPPING SPARROW, a SONG SPARROW, etc.

Cheers :-) from Jim in Wolfville, 542-9204
