All photographers and feeder watchers: There is obviously a great winter show of redpolls and it would be nice to have diagnostic photos for "NS Birds" of the four kinds (two Common and two Hoary subspecies) that have been claimed. Great portraits of individual birds are be fine to dsicriminate between the two species, but to pin down the subspecies, group shots are better. Blake Matbank has earlier mailed sources of information on these matters. The larger, browner Common Redpoll subspecies _rostrata_ (breeding in Nunavut, w. Greenland) and the more regular, widespread _flammea_ could be thus distinguished if side-by side. Ditto for the larger, frostier Hoary subspecies _honemanni_ (breeding in n. Nunavut, nw Greenland) compared with the "southern" _exilipes_, if posed side by side with the usual _flammea_ Common. I hope we may see some diagnostic shots. Best, Ian McLaren (as photo editor, "NS Birds")
