Overheard, as best I remember it, at a NAMA conference some time ago :

"Because English is the international language of science, or because
the Americans and British are less open-minded about such things,
mycologists from countries that don't speak english (under the duress
of acceptability) have adopted latin pronunciation used by english
speaking mycologists, though they probably wince inside every time.
When not in the presence of english speaking mycologists, however,
many continue pronounce the names in the way that they always have,
as for example, "a-man-ee-ta", especially those mycologists from
countries whose languages have a strong Latin root.

Which prompted me to write:

Dead And Buried In Time

In order to prevent contention
Someone authored this convention,
When pronouncing latin we
Must say it as it ought to be
And it ought to be as were taught to say,
Though we have no hint from that distant day.

So really...

Amaneeta, Amanighta,
Who's to say which one is right-a.
The Romans left us artifacts
And fine examples of syntax
In histories of conquered lands,
From Britain's shores to Arab sands,
But nothing relict of that nation
Clues as to pronunciation.

Yet we carry on, but I wonder somehow,
What would a Roman think if he heard us now?

Regards,
K.
