--Apple-Mail-40-39570862 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII; delsp=yes; format=flowed Hi folks, Hyperaspis brunnescens Dobzhansky is one of the rarest species of lady beetles on the continent. Only 19 specimens have previously been collected, all of them from dry mesic prairie habitats in Illinois, Iowa, and Minnesota. Consequently the discovery of this species is Nova Scotia is a noteworthy one and represents a range extension for this species of some 2,100 km. A specimen was found on 9 August 2005 by Kathleen Aikens and Andrew MacDonald, two students of David McCorquodale's at Cape Breton University, at the mouth of a Leach's Storm Petrel burrow on Scatarie Island, Nova Scotia. This is one of the rarest species of lady beetles on the continent. Many questions about the status of the species in the province remain unanswered and it is deserving of further study. We have just published a paper on this discovery in Entomological News: Majka, C.G., Aikens, K.R., MacDonald, A., Townsend, S.M., and McCorquodale, D.B. 2007. Hyperaspis brunnescens Dobzhansky (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) newly recorded in Canada from Scatarie Island, Nova Scotia. Entomological News, 118(4): 402-406. For those who would like to find out more, PDF reprint of the paper is available at: http://www.chebucto.ns.ca/Environment/NHR/PDF/Hyperaspis_brunnescens.pdf For those who are interested in seeing what this remarkable lady beetle looks like, I have some photographs available at: http://www.chebucto.ns.ca/Environment/NHR/Images3/ Hyperaspis_brunnescens-1.jpg http://www.chebucto.ns.ca/Environment/NHR/Images3/ Hyperaspis_brunnescens-4.jpg Best wishes, Chris Christopher Majka Nova Scotia Museum, 1747 Summer St., Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada B3H 3A6 c.majka@ns.sympatico.ca --Apple-Mail-40-39570862 Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Content-Type: text/html; charset=ISO-8859-1 <html><body style=3D"word-wrap: break-word; -webkit-nbsp-mode: space; = -webkit-line-break: after-white-space; "><div><div><div><div>Hi = folks,</div><div><br = class=3D"webkit-block-placeholder"></div><div><i>Hyperaspis = brunnescens</i>=A0Dobzhansky=A0is one of the rarest species of lady = beetles on the continent.
