They're most easily recognized by the short antennae that come out from the center between the large eyes, and also you can see the halters below the wings. The abdomen of these flies also looks sort of "jointed" (see my photo down below to see what I mean). http://www.flickr.com/photos/58321572@N00/1198751046/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/58321572@N00/1198750760/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/58321572@N00/1197887027/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/58321572@N00/1213083775 Here's a link to my photo of what I take to be Spilomyia sayi, photographed here in eastern Ontario. The wings are smoky, and held in a very wasp-like pose. In the first photo, you can see the halter on the side below the wing. Also, the "jointed" looking abdomen as mentioned above. They're very convincing mimics, occasionally doing a pretty good imitation of mock aggression when disturbed. http://www.pbase.com/crocodile/image/32572184 And a pair mating: http://www.pbase.com/crocodile/image/33201954 bev On 23-Aug-07, at 10:31 AM, Angus MacLean wrote: > I have uploaded a series of wasp photos.
