--Apple-Mail-1-569730354 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII; delsp=yes; format=flowed Last evening approximately between 9:30 and 11:00 the piping sounds of small flocks of shorebirds were heard in the night sky as they passed overhead from northwest to southeast here at Horton Bluff. Each piping group was two or three minutes apart, each pass fading out in the SE as a new group was heard coming in from the westward. In the 15 or 20 minutes that I did pay close attention, at least 6 groups went over. I had other things to do, but I was aware of their piping sounds drifting through my study window while I worked at my desk. Shortly after 11:30, just before getting off to bed, I specifically went out on my deck hoping to hear more activity, but all was quiet. This is an event I witness every year around this time. Conditions in common each year are: close to Perseid meteor time, clear or clearing night sky just after a weather system (a LOW) has moved through, small flocks flying high with continuous piping sound, each group is spaced a few minutes apart, movement is always NW to SE. and usually extends over a period of one to three hours. The period last evening seemed shorter than other years.
