Index of Subjects

I checked out a wet site this afternoon on Gaspereau Mountain hoping for some different dragonflies. No luck on that but I did find a few things.
- flushed three Spruce Grouse when I got out of the car.
- A Black-billed Cuckoo called nearby.
- 7-8 Aphrodite Fritillaries in the area, all badly worn. (Atlantis is the commoner of the two around here).
- 1 Silvery Checkerspot (only managed one pic) Looks like a Crescent ..scarce in NS, I believe.
- 1 Hummingbird Moth which the second time around landed on the back of my neck!! (Did not stick around for a photo).
- many Longhorn Beetles on Meadowsweet, Queen Anne's Lace & Goldenrod. These were Stictoleptura canadensis, Typocerus v. velutinus & one other (with longitudinal bright red striping & 6 yellow blotches...will post pic later). It is obvious why this group (lepturines- I like that term!!) are so numerous....half of them are busy copulating at any one time!
- Lots of wasps, fewer flies & bees.
- Lots of Ruby/Cherry-faced Meadowhawks
- Common Whitetails, Shadow Darners, Green-striped Darner (Overall dragonfly numbers were substantially less from the past two years).

Angus
