Saturday, August 11, 2007 - Shubie Park
Join Bernie Hart, a former Curator of Education at the NSMNH, on a field trip in Shubie Park. Bernie will give a slide presentation about the history of the Shubenacadie Canal. Following this, we'll visit two locks and their associated structures: the Canal Camp; the Blacksmith's shop; and the Cut itself, which was excavated between 1826 and 1831. Bernie also plans to address the interplay between the Canal works and the natural history of the area.
. Contact: Burkhard and Ingrid Plache, 475-1129; email hfn.programme@gmail.com
. Time and place: 10:00 a.m., Fairbanks Centre, Shubie Park. From the Circumferential Hwy in Dartmouth (at the interchange just beyond the exit to Micmac Mall) turn onto Braemar Drive/Waverley Rd. Follow this for approximately 1.5km. On your right you'll pass a Tim Horton's. Immediately beyond are traffic lights and an intersection. Just beyond this turn left onto Locks Rd. The Fairbanks Centre is at the end of Locks Rd. which terminates in the parking lot for Shubie Park.
      . Duration: 2 hours
. Difficulty: Easy; solid footwear recommended
