I occasionally see a second juvenile with our bird but never at the house.

I have no real concerns as this bird seems to be in good health and I assume will leave on his own volition in due time.

He has provided a lot of laughs as we watch him learn survival skills. He spends most of his time either on a bean plant support in our garden or sitting on furniture or railings of our deck looking in our windows at us. He watches other birds and mimics their behavior. Today he learned how to get suet out of a suet cage near our deck rail; which caused a noisy protest from our resident woodpeckers. Earlier this week he tried sunflower seeds but couldn't open the shells and so they passed through undigested. I expect it will be fighting the hummers at their feeder soon. He has also developed a taste for blueberries.

The only real negatives is its habit of pulling up transplants in our garden to examine the roots and the use of our deck as a toilet.

We will miss him/her when he/she leaves.

All the best.

Fritz McEvoy

Sunrise Valley, CB (near Dingwall)

From: Helene Van Doninck <hvandoninck@eastlink.ca>
Reply-To: naturens@chebucto.ns.ca
To: naturens@chebucto.ns.ca
Subject: RE: [NatureNS] Raven question
Date: Tue, 07 Aug 2007 23:10:34 -0300

HI Fritz, I have raised several ravens (all released and accepted into normal populations I might proudly add) and their first attempts at vocalization are often that....

Its kind of funny the first time they make a real sound as I have actually seen them jump back in surprise at their own sound :)

Most of the corvids are pretty docile at the fledge stage until they learn proper avoidance behaviour from their parents. It has no fear of humans as I can approach to within three feet. It seems to have no medical problems other than an inability to vocalize. It attempts to call but can only produce low guttural sounds.

At first this was interesting but now I wonder if it may be imprinting on humans and whether or not I should discourage its remaining at my house? Does this behavior occur from time to time and will the bird leave on his own volition in time? All the best.

Fritz

Windows Live Hotmail.
