Index of Subjects Doug Bats will choose the best hang-outs. Real houses work better than most bat-houses. They use structures both for day-roosts/nursery colonies, and also as night-roosts - somewhere to hang out and digest the first feeding binge of the night. Denying access to the umbrella is a good idea. You probably have a good supply of food nearby, so the umbrella offers good. The young-of-the year are also starting to feed, so you will have a bit of exploration of what we would call "novel" roost areas. What type of bat house did you erect? Cheers Andrew A Hebda Nova Scotia Museum >>> Doug Linzey <doug@fundymud.com> 7/30/2007 4:37 PM >>> Friday when I opened up the umbrella on the deck a bat and I startled each other. It was having a snooze and I was looking for some shade. Friday night I lowered the umbrella again, and Saturday while we were at the dining table we watched seven bats emerge at dusk. As interesting as this is, the deck table did accumulate some droppings, so we've denied the bats their shelter the last couple of nights. As a matter of interest, there is a bat house attached to the south side of our house above the deck, but it appears to go unused. Doug Linzey Arlington
