My post of yesterday identified a wasp as a Blackjacket (see below). It is instead a Digger Wasp (Philantus bilunatus). These wasps are known as Bee Wolves. They capture bees, take them to their nest and lay their eggs on the last bee. -- - -- - - - -- - - - - -- - --- -- - - - - - - - - - - - - - -- - - - - - - - - -- - - - - - - - - - - - - - -- - - - - - - - -- - - - - 1. I believe the first photo is a Blackjacket wasp, Vespula consobrina. It shows the extent wasps can articulate their abdomens! -- - -- - - - -- - - - - -- - --- -- - - - - - - - - - - - - - -- - - - - - - - - -- - - - - - - - - - - - - - -- - - - - - - - -- - - - - This wasp can be viewed at: http://www.flickr.com/photos/58321572@N00/898989464/in/photostream Angus
