I don't know if the person keeping track of Monarch sightings is still doing so but Wendy and I spent the last 3 days on the South Shore and, at several locations, Monarchs were the most abundant large lep observed. On Cape Sable Island, we saw a total of about a dozen split roughly equally between Daniels Head and The Hawk. Other leps noted were White Admiral, Red Admiral (still lots of these around) and American Lady (Id'ed using the feature "American Ladys have big eyes"). (24 July) In Liverpool, 3 Monarchs were observed at the end of the gravel road past the Hank Snow Museum and the Sewage Ponds (25 July). At Port Medway, 2 Monarchs were seen (25 July). On CSI, shorebird viewing was made more complicated by the never-ending fog!! However, we did manage to see one of the adult Am. Oystercatchers, a few H. Godwits and Black-crowned Night-heron. We made no attempt to estimate numbers of SB Dowitchers!! Cheers, Bob McDonald Halifax bobathome@eastlink.ca
