Hi Ian
There was also a report of a Black Vulture in the Caribou, Pictou Co.. area last winter. I don't as yet have a specific date, but photos were taken.
Ken

  All:

I wonder if anyone has infformation on this report of a Black Vulture last
winter? It was not reported in the last issue "Nova Scotia Birds." It would
not, of course, be our only winter record and is not the most northerly one,
but it may be the most northerly one for NS.

  Cheers, Ian

  Dear Mr. McLaren,

I wonder if you have heard any reports of a Black Vulture at the
Dingwall dump last winter. This would appear to be the northernmost
record of the species and it is very interesting that the bird
apparently was completely intimidating to ravens, which practically
cleared out while the vulture was present.

  Storrs,

Buff-breasted Sandpiper is regular in small numbers in Atlantic Canada Mid August to early October. The winter Black Vulture would be more unusual. The best person to report that to would be Ian McLaren in Halifax, Nova Scotia. His email address is. iamclar@dal.ca

  Thanks for the reports.

I sent in a report to MacTavish last August about a Buff-breasted Sandpiper at South Harbour. I did not get a response so did not report that the same bird was present a week later. I have no idea whether the first report was published or is scheduled to be but I can supply the further details just for the record if anyone is keeping track of such.

Of more importance, I wonder if any of you have heard a report of a Black Vulture on northern Cape Breton in the dead of last winter (probably January). I have photos and some information on behavior, etc., and am working on getting more details. I would like to write this up for publication but do not want to duplicate anything that someone else might be doing, although I don't think the record has come to the attention of birders or ornithologists until now. Is there a source updating the status of Black Vulture in Nova Scotia since Tuck? Pretty extraordinary occurrence if you ask me.
