Index of Subjects This is a multi-part message in MIME format. --Boundary_(ID_rXHgPmfZyyrKQavoFQxONw) Content-type: text/plain; charset=iso-8859-1 Content-transfer-encoding: 7BIT The Pink Lady's Slipper was blooming nicely at the Frog Pond, Sir Sanford Fleming Park in Halifax, a couple of weeks ago. Laura and I visited a couple of times but the gloomy weather compelled me to lean my camera against trees to get photos. Most were fuzzy but I've attached one that isn't too bad. On Sunday Laura and I enjoyed a drive and walk at Smiley's PP. A usually skittish Northern Flicker allowed some photos as it vacuumed up ants. Most bird species tend to be a little tamer when they are foraging to feed nestlings. On our way home we rescued a Painted Turtle that made it part way across the road and then froze in fear. The price for the rescue was a photo but I don't think the turtle objected. Yesterday I went to Taylor Head PP and hiked to Taylor's Head via the beach walk in a counterclockwise loop. No sooner had I hit the trail then two Song Sparrows did their broken wing routine for me. I must have been very close to the nest so I kept moving and left them in peace. I found the reported Northern Wheatear but I couldn't get within 100 metres of the bird. This thrush of open subartic barrens is constantly moving and hopping between high points to look around. It took a quick look at me and was gone in a flash. I'll try again in a week or so because I believe this bird is here for the summer,...or not. On my return I found a stranded Northern Gannet, a very sad sight. I contacted a couple of private organizations and DNR, so we'll see. Perhaps the bird can extricate itself. Shortly thereafter I spotted a Hermit Thrush carrying food so photographic evidence for breeding is at hand. The last two photos in this set are a swarm of insects, making for an unusual photo. A not yet open Showy Lady's Slipper from Smiley's PP completes the set ... and it's all thanks to a little sunny weather.
