I have a large bank of creeping thyme which erupts briefly into a wonderful, fragrant, purple display around this time every year. Part of the delight it gives when in bloom is that the whole area literally hums loudly all day long with the sound of foraging bees - mostly bumble bees. This year, to my distress, it is totally silent; though I did see one or two bumble bees earlier in the season, I have not noted one single bee of any kind at this feast that is lying there waiting for them.
