Suzanne Borkowski and I did an owl survey on our Earltown route last night, and had a great and memorable time. Listening conditions were very good, with little runoff or peeper noise and no wind at most stops. The sky was clear and filled with bright stars, so aside from cold temperatures (hard on the owlers) it was a good owling night.

We saw a Barred Owl perched beside the road at our first stop before the survey began. It flew away and never called, so can be noted in the "Comments" column but not counted for the survey. We had no owls during the survey protocol at this first stop but then heard 21 owls at the remaining 9 stops: 12 Barreds, 7 N. Saw-whets and 2 Great-horneds. Also heard 2 Wilson's Snipe at the first stop. Saw 3 Ruffed Grouse on the drive in at dusk, and lots of Snowshoe Hare.

We had 3 Barreds fly in to the car/CD player and call for long periods - a pair at one stop and a single at another. Although exciting to have vocalizing owls so close (one landed on Suzanne's car), it is upsetting to cause this much disturbance to them during the breeding season.

Having finished the survey a little after 12:30, we paused to warm up with a cup of hot cocoa before beginning the 90-minute drive back to Halifax. This gave us an opportunity to meet a handsome young police officer, who pulled up behind us with lights flashing, not to offer roadside assistance as I first thought but to check out our suspicious vehicle. Despite my explanation (Bird Studies Canada, owl survey, ...), he wasn't convinced until Suzanne also emerged from the car, wielding her cup of cocoa.

Suzanne, who was driving, most fortuitously remained awake throughout the drive home. I cannot say the same for myself.

Cheers,
Susann
