Hi Jim,

Scott & Scott's (1988) Atlantic Fishes of Canada says that kyack (or
kiack or kyak) can refer to either the Blueback Herring (Alosa
aestivalis) or else the Alewife/Gaspereau (Alosa pseudoharengus).
There are a number of other common names:

Blueback Herring - blueback, blueback mulhaden, river herring, glut
herring, summer herring, black belly
Gaspereau - alewife, sawbelly, spreau, river herring, glut herring

So, there are a plethora of choices, and common names don't always
distinguish between the two since, as you point out, the two species
are very similar.

All the best!

Chris
