For the past two days, there has been a strong smell of plankton in South End and downtown Halifax, no doubt borne in by the SE winds. It is caused by the spring bloom of phytoplankton, and likely by the breakdown of the plant cells, which at this season are likely to be mainly diatoms. This is an annual occurrence, one that I've commented on before, but it's great to know that the marine production cycle in coastal waters is unfolding as it should. Eric
