On Saturday (April 7) I flushed a pair of Harlequin Ducks on the Tusket
River, near the headwaters. They were in a section of rapids just below
a new woods road, a kilometre or two below Barrio Lake. Not the
greatest of looks, as we were all startled by the experience, but the
brighter, presumably male bird was standing on a boulder in mid stream
when it flushed, while the female was in the rapids. Their distinctive
squeaking call notes gave them away. A rather suggestive observation
given the habitat and time of year.

Nothing much else of bird interest. There were a pairs of Common
Mergansers in a few of the lakes and deadwaters. Lots of White-winged
and a few Red Crossbills singing in the spruce/hemlock stands.

Dwayne Sabine
