On Sunday morning, I was having breakfast and watching birds at my feeders
(I also tally them for Project FeederWatch
http://www.bsc-eoc.org/national/pfw.html); I had just put out a fresh bobca=
t
carcass about a half hour before this. Ravens started coming in to the
carcass, and within about 20 minutes, there were 21 Ravens jockeying for
position (this despite there being an unfinished, unattended coyote carcass
from Saturday only about 10 m away =96 they clearly prefer the viscera over
the flesh).

All of a sudden, all the ravens flushed (this while I was fortunately
looking through the scope at the time) and I thought for sure that an eagle
was coming in (I record three or more eagles almost every weekend). Instead=
,
it was an adult Red-tailed Hawk that caused the furor. We've been having tw=
o
Red-tails feeding periodically (one juvenile, one adult) for about four
weeks now. Given that the Hawk is a smaller bird than the Raven, and given
that it was severely outnumbered, I was quite surprised at this event. Not
only that, when the Ravens came back, the Hawk would lunge, flick a wing, o=
r
actually run at Ravens that would come too close.

The Hawk eventually took off after having fed for awhile, but came back
later to repeat the whole thing.

Another interesting interaction at the carcasses occurred last week =96 May
pointed out to me that at least one raven was periodically pulling at the
tail feathers of one of the adult eagles, as it fed. I then watched it
happen a few more times=85it did not appear that the raven was seriously
trying to yank out the feather, and the eagle did not appear too annoyed.

And still not a single Redpoll, Shrike, Phalarope or Snow Bunting at all
this winter; only one A. Tree Sparrow has shown up, but it has been somewha=
t
regular.

Randy
