Good evening, Suzanne Borkowski and I visited a number of sites on the Dartmouth side of the Harbour yesterday and also worked our way out the Eastern Shore. We managed to fill a few holes on our Winter lists. Here are a few highlights: - Eastern Passage Rd (on the way out to Hartlens Pt) - Hooded Merganser (5; 1 M, 4 F), Horned Grebe (1), Black Guillemot (seen at many locations and, sadly, the only alcid seen), Scaup (both Lesser and Greater) - Hartlens Point - Scoters (mainly White-winged with a few Surf and a couple of Black), Long-tailed Duck (seen at most locations), Common Goldeneye (lots around), Common Loon (2), Red-necked Grebe (1), American Pipits (at least 2 dozen working on the kelp beds) - Caldwell Road feeder (only Song, White-throated and American Tree Sparrows seen) - Rainbow haven Beach - flock of Yellow-rumped Warblers, imm. Bald eagle, Canada Geese - Conrad's Beach - very quiet but 1 Red-throated Loon well seen - Three Fathom Harbour - our search for the shorebirds was unsuccessful but more Scaup (mainly Greaters), C. Goldeneye and Bufflehead were noted. - Fisherman's Reserve - we dipped out on Purple Sandpipers but some mud flats on the approach road had 1 Black-bellied Plover, 4 Red Knot and at least 1 Bonaparte's Gull in a group of Black-headed Gulls. - our last stop was at the Salmon River bridge on Highway 107 which was not the place to be at 5:00 PM on a Friday!! The traffic was horrendous but we did add American Wigeon and Ring-necked Duck to the list while a small flock of Robins flew over. A great day for birding and enjoying Nature. Cheers, Bob McDonald Halifax
