On my second try I did manage to see the Yellow-bellied Sapsucker at Marion Fulton, Hantsport this afternoon. Its very bright red areas looked especially striking as the snow was falling. Just after returning to Hwy. 101 at the top of "Hantsport" hill, a Merlin flew across the highway. It displayed a very light gray back (not blue, at least in the overcast conditions), suggesting the race "Richardsons", usually referred to as the Prairie Merlin. However from a Net search, I see where some think the local race "Columbarius" can be that light in colour. In any case such light-coloured Merlins are rarely seen in NS (correct me if that is not true?!). No mention of this race in the "Birds of Nova Scotia". Just W. of Avonport a Peregrine flew along the Gaspereau R. and crossed #101 heading perhaps to Grand Pre. Angus
