Dear all,
Thanks for all the useful input on this privately and via NatureNS, and the
several suggestions as to what to do about the long dead, frozen, possible
Least Bittern. I thought it might just be unusual but have been a bit
surprised at the assessment of its possible importance.
To keep everyone current on what's up, I've suggested to my contact
that she may
wish to get in touch with Ian McLaren directly -- he apparently has a licence
to handle such a bird. This would get the bird into his hands so he can
definitively identify what it is, then convey it to the NS Museum of NH if
that's still desirable. This sounded to me like as good an option as any
suggested. My contact wanted something useful to come of it, but doesn't
always read her e-mail promptly, so it might take a bit of time to get
the real
scoop on what it is, and what sort of condition it's in. I imagine that Ian
will let us all know if it really was a LB or something of lesser interest,
after he has had a good look at it. That's all the useful info that I have at
present, so, like you, am looking forward to a future definitive ID one way or
the other.
Regards,
Steve
