This morning BB, a friend and I went to a favorite
lake for a little fishing and paddling. Lovely day
warm and calm.
Still some flies out - Stoneflies we thought anyway,
midges and so on - not many but some still there.
Water birds have left the lake to let ice take over.
After my friend with the camera left, I heard a loud
commotion in the trees along the shore. When we went
over we found a female Pileated Woodpecker just at the
shore line feeding on dead trees just above the
ground. She was unafraid of us - we got to 4 - 5
meters away as she continued to call and search for
food. It appeared she only called when in flight but I
couldn't be 100 % sure of that - next time I'll check
closer. After a bit she remembered another spot and
flew off.
Other than a few Blue Jays and Doves flying back and
forth the only other bird interest was a group of 30 -
40 crows annoying some other bird. I didn't see the
annoyed one but since there are Barred Owls in the
area, prehaps that was what it was.
Enjoy a pleasant fall paddle.
Paul
