12 November 2006 Signs of winter: I found at least 35 Harlequin Ducks (including at least 25 males) along the coast adjacent the village of Prospect. The best viewing spot was the High Head, the hill just north of Indian Point. Here is the URL for the map: http://maybank.tripod.com/BSNS/Change/HRM-C.htm#update The ducks were putting on quite a show, and were split among several smaller groups, as well as the odd single and pair. This is the first I've noted them along this coast this autumn, but a couple of Prospect residents said they had noticed them during the previous week. In addition there were two immature Black Scoters mixed in with the eider, and two American Tree Sparrows at a Prospect feeder. I had more than 40 cormorants along the coast between Prospect and Peggys Cove, and all were Great Cormorants, in a variety of plumages. The best studies were on rocks off Indian Harbour.
