I did a shorebird survey at Morien Bar and a bit of other birding on Saturday. Highlights were:

Kennington Cove Road, Louisbourg:
  Spruce Grouse - 5
  Pine Grosbeak - 2
  Gray Jay - 2
  Red-necked Grebe - 3
  Black-legged Kittiwake - 18

Morien Bar:
  Black-bellied Plover - 126
  Semipalmated Plover - 103
Greater Yellowlegs - 82 (some juvs. were slim and smaller-looking, but still distinguishable with care as Greaters)
  Whimbrel - 1
  Hudsonian Godwit - 3
  Red Knot - 37
  Sanderling - 34
  Semipalmated Sandpiper - 20
  White-rumped Sandpiper - 4
  Pectoral Sandpiper - 3 juvs.
  Baird's Sandpiper - 1 juv.
  Dunlin - 176
Short-billed Dowitcher - 2 juvs. (more likely to have been Long-billeds by this date, but these moved close to shore eventually to show their highly-patterned tertials and bills that drooped slightly in the outer third)
  Great Blue Heron - 95

Mira Gut:
Common Loon - 8 (approx. half adults)
  Red-throated Loon - 1
Red-necked Grebe - 1 ad., in mostly breeding plumage
Horned Grebe - 8 (1 still in partly breeding plumage)
  White-winged Scoter - 27
  Surf Scoter - 25
  Long-tailed Duck - 1 female
  Red-breasted Merganser - a raft of 70

It was wonderful to be out all day in warm sunshine.
Cheers,
Susann Myers
