I would guess that the continuation down the coast rather than the more direct route relates to food availability in the Brazil current. The Falkland current together with the Southern Ocean current flows from Northern Argentina past Tristan da Cunha and is the recommended sailing ship route from the River Plate to the Cape.. I will be interested in seeing if that is the route they take.
