Jeannie et al., Indeed Mary is right about the wood frog, AND it is this
year's froglet, of course. The buprestid beetle chews wood, and thus it can
bite if handled carelessly. And I call the plant with the berries witherod,
rather than withewood. Cheers from Jim in Wolfville

Hi Jeannie & All,                Aug 13, 2006

The insect is a Buprestid Beetle [Metalic Wood Boring Beetle], probably
Buprestis sp.

The shrub looks like Viburnum cassinoides [Withewood] but the
fruiting cluster is usually erect and these seem to be pendant. As the name
suggests this shrub is unusually pliable and, with a bit of working, a round
stem about 8 mm across can be bent in a 10 cm diameter circle.

Yours truly, Dave Webster, Kentville

Hi everyone,

While at my cottage I photographed a few things. The first being some sort
of bug (which I think I've seen before) I was wondering if someone could
tell me what it is and if they bite. The second is a tree we have growing
in our yard...right now the berries are green but they turn blue in late
summer( fall).Last,  is a small frog.It looks big in the first pic taken
close-up, the second I photographed it next to a dime for size
comparison.If
someone could help me with ID's I would greatly appreciate it.

Thank you,Jeannie
