Aug. 15/06 - PHOTOS taken of a NORWAY MAPLE leaf infected with ?intermediate stage of TAR SPOT FUNGUS? Now the earlier initial round whitish splotches (photographed on Aug. 1/06) on the leaves have been succeeded by larger splotches that are light green to tan/yellowish, and dark brown dots the size of large pepper grains that are on some splotches coalescing into what will probably soon become the familiar all-dark splotches all over the upper surfaces of the leaves. Later these splotches often seem to either fall out of the leaf (as probably the spores of the fungus are being dispersed?), creating circular/elliptical spaces, or are just resorbed by the leaf. Perhaps not coincidentally, today on the noon CBC Radio news, I heard just part of an item concerning some FUNGUS INFECTION OF NORWAY MAPLE in New Brunswick? (Rothsay?); this infection does not affect other species of maple, according to the news item. Is there anyone out there in cyberspace who heard this news item and can fill in more information here?
