Paul, I'll bet that the plentiful skating small bugs on the river surface were broad-shouldered water striders, alias ripple bugs, which occur in big gregarious groups and are only found on flowing water -- very abundant and widespread in streams and rivers. Cheers from Jim P.S. Dare I ask, Paul, what river you were on? ---------- From: Paul MacDonald <paulrita2001@yahoo.com> Reply-To: naturens@chebucto.ns.ca Date: Fri, 11 Aug 2006 05:23:09 -0700 (PDT) To: Nature NS <naturens@chebucto.ns.ca> Subject: [NatureNS] New Paddle Hi All Last evening I wanted to try out a new oak paddle from Milton Fancy. So BB and I went to the river. Unusual evening on the river - the wind was blowing up river and the current bringing the water down of course. The wind and the current balanced each other so that the water was dead calm. not a ripple but the wind was strong enough to blow the canoe up river. I've canoed a lot of times but that was a first. There is a lot of small black bugs on the water - they look like flies but just walk around on the surface tension or should I say swim. Anyway the swallows were feeding on them - swooping down and hitting the water as they picked them up. Swallows were plentiful dozens in the air at once - forked tailed and square tailed. No doubt soon be migrating. The water in the river has gone down considerably in the last week but is still much higher than is usual for August. Pickeral weed is in heavy bloom - I also saw a white flower on the bank - I thought first it was a black berry but some other kind of vine. It's leaf was a maple leaf type. Small white flower but very intense. The paddle worked fine - a bit heavy in the shaft - but a 9 out of 10. Have a nice summer Paul __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
